In case it’s not clear from Kim’s recent posts on the biker-inspired trend, or my recent piece that included the leather-trim denim look, all things leather are super hot for fall.
I’ve been excited to try the trend, particularly leather tees and sweaters. When I spotted a Theory leather-front sweater on sale at Loehmann’s, I snatched it up quickly and headed off to the dressing room. But I was so disappointed. The leather, while supple, didn’t hang as well as fabric. The result, when paired with the slender knit sleeves, was a look that made me appear about twice my normal size. I was so bummed.
I still love the look of leather details on tops, I just know that leather-front is not the look for me. So, I’ve been keeping an eye out for leather detail sweaters where the leather placement is in a location that is flattering. I’ve narrowed the field down to my top five choices. Let me know what you think…
I think this leather patch-pocket merino wool sweater from J.Crew is the front runner for a new space in my closet. I like the easygoing tunic shape and the unobtrusive placement of the leather pockets. I’d wear this with skinny jeans and fun booties.

The lambskin leather patch placement on this wool sweater is unique, and would be flattering on a wide range of women. There’s a matching skirt, but that feels like a bit of overkill.

Leather elbow patches are kind of old school, but I still like the overall look of this sweater. The slouchy fit looks comfy, and the addition of the leather trim along the raglan seams ups the overall look.

The quilting of the leather shoulder patches make this Club Monaco sweater stand out. Plus, I’m loving that they’ve added leather details to a cashmere sweater, for that luxury on top of luxury feel.

There isn’t a ton of leather on this Massimo Dutti cape-style sweater, but the addition of an equestrian-inspired buckle to a tuxedo collar sweater comes off as super luxurious, despite the affordable price.
