5 Stunning Minimalist Finds from Banana Republic
Wednesday, January 21, 2015
Anyone else notice that most mainstream, affordable American labels do not have a strong selection of minimalist pieces? There are plenty of European minimalist options – Zara, & Other Stories, COS, and the like. But there is not a lot to choose from at your average American mall store.
I suspect this is because the stark, architectural look of minimalist fashion is not as popular with mainstream America as it is with the European market counterpart. It makes economic sense for the stores, I’m sure. But it frustrates me. Absent a bottomless bank account, a girl can’t live on Helmut Lang and Saint Laurent alone.
So, in the interest of filling out a wardrobe without dropping a lot of cash, I like hunt for minimalist finds in unexpected places. This week, that was Banana Republic, which has lately been the home of khaki pants, ruffles, and floral prints. Ugh. Unbelievably, I found five pieces that would be just as at home at Ssense or The Dreslyn as good old BR. Plus, you can get 40% off full-priced items with code BRTIME through 1/25.
Check out my bargain-priced finds and let me know what you think…
1. Banana Republic Light Silk Tunic, $89.50
This simple silk popover tunic is practically begging to be paired with skinny leather pants and boots. Bonus downtown-chic points for the fact that the model looks like a lost member of the Roitfeld clan.
2. Banana Republic Ruched Jersey Long Dress, $98.00
I swear I have this dress’s twin. Except mine is Alexander Wang and cost a whole lot more than $98.00. This is the kind of versatile, flattering dress that you’ll wear until it falls apart.
3. BR Monogram Mesh Draped Tank, $65.00 (was $79.50)
This striking mesh-inset tank is my absolute must-buy of the group. It will look amazing with a pencil skirt for an evening occasion, or paired with a suit for work. And that price… plus you can get an extra 50% off this sale-priced item with code BREXTRA through 1/23.
4. Banana Republic Ruched Black Jersey Pencil Skirt, $79.50
A jersey pencil skirt is a minimalist wardrobe basic. It has an ease that can be quickly dressed down with sneakers or flats, but add heels and it instantly becomes a dressy option.
5. Banana Republic Heritage Ribbed Crew Cropped Pullover, $89.50
I love the look of a cropped sweater over a crisp white button-down, paired with cropped skinny black trousers. It’s a minimalist go-to look, as a quick spin through Pinterest will reveal. This merino wool blend option will instantaneously become wardrobe staple, for a great price.
