I hated puffer jackets when I was growing up. As a native Californian living on the valley floor, I didn't have much use for a heavy duty puffer coat. Therefore, the fact that I thought they were horrible had little impact on my daily life. Fast forward twenty years or so and picture me in Chicago on the coldest day in 15 years. With the mercury hovering around negative 19 Fahrenheit, I was awfully glad that I had the good sense to buy a puffer coat before I set off on my trip.
Now I'm a true believer in always having a puffer coat on hand. Wool coats may be chic and fabulous, but they are fairly useless in sub zero temperatures, particularly if you plan on staying outdoors longer than it takes to hail a cab. Thankfully, puffer coats are now a lot more stylish than the fluorescent potato sacks I remember as a kid.
