Hiya, SJ Readers! I just wanted to drop in and mention a few artists who are literally forcing me to take notice, whether it be for the first time or the millionth time. The first two are super soulful female R&B singers, and the third is a songwriter from the Faroe Islands (best travel CD ever). I hope you love them as much as I do!
Chrisette Michele is an R&B singer from New York who reminds me of a modern day jazz singer along the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. She struck me while I had my TV on VH1 for background music, and I stopped what I was doing to watch her video. I loved what I was hearing, and I just had to share my discovery with all of you. If you need a little extra incentive, she sang on tracks with Jay-Z and Nas. Chrisette is extremely soulful, and I suggest checking out her Unplugged performance. Great music for a chill cocktail party.

Me'Shell is no newcomer to the music scene, debuting with her first album called "Plantation Lullabies" in the early '90s. I can't get enough of her album entitled "Bitter," released in 1999. It's one of those collections that you just NEED to hear every once in a while. It is so perfect to accompany you during a long mope over a relationship, or even when you just want to reflect (not to mention a couple songs to get you "in the mood" if you need the help!). I think of a large glass (oh hell, maybe a bottle) of red wine, pajamas, and lots of candles when I hear her music.

Given my other two picks, Teitur (pronounced tie-tour) is definitely not a conventional third choice. He is a Danish songwriter who has the most beautifully written songs. He has been compared to a young James Taylor and his style is described as "folk rock," whatever that means! I don’t know how I’d survive all my cross country flights without this CD. As soon as I hear the first song, I just sort of drift off into closed eye bliss. His songs are quiet and pensive, and that’s just the mood I gravitate towards when I am traveling. It’s so tough for me to pick 3 songs off this album that are worth checking out because this is definitely one of those CD’s that you can listen to all the way through and still wish there were more songs! But... if I had to absolutely choose...
